MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

Muscular dystrophy is an inherited genetic condition that causes the muscles to weaken over time. It is caused by changes in the genes responsible for the structure and functioning of the body’s muscles.

Living with muscular dystrophy isn’t always easy, but having the right care in place can bring support, comfort and hope.

More than 70,000 people in the UK have muscular dystrophy (MD), or a related condition. There are many different types of MD, affecting people in different ways. Our specialist teams can provide the care to suit you, tailored to your condition.

How can we help?

We understand that muscular dystrophy and associated muscle diseases can create different physical challenges over time. That’s why we don’t just focus on today, but on delivering reactive and diligent care that will meet our clients’ needs as time goes by. We recognise the emotional strain that dealing with muscular dystrophy can place on an individual, and those close to them; feeling dependent on others, and lacking in independence. Our approach to care planning for our clients goes the extra mile, taking into account our clients’ lifestyle choices as well as all their health needs. We encourage emotional well-being by motivating and enabling our clients to take part in activities they enjoy and interacting with others. We pride ourselves on providing a flexible service, tailored to our clients’ needs. In short, we’ll provide the support they need to enjoy a full, independent life in their own home. For our younger clients, this includes supporting families in their primary carer role, including working in partnership to find ways to facilitate family life for every member of that family. We believe that every client should receive the care that works for them. As such, we make sure that all of our personal care assistants receive training specific to the clients they are working with, which often includes: • ventilator care • respiratory management • oxygen therapy Our expertise and experience in all these areas mean we are well-placed to support individuals and families at all stages of muscular dystrophy.
